YOUTUBE: GROUP INSECT NUTRITION

On the YouTube channel of GIN-TONIC (Group on Insect Nutrition) we share knowledge related to the science of insect dietary needs, physiology, and feed innovation. GIN-TONIC aims to build a hub that brings together fragmented research from academia and industry, synthesises it, and makes it accessible, highlighting what we know, what we don’t know yet, and where the next breakthroughs should happen.
If you’re curious about what it takes to make insects a part of tomorrow’s sustainable food system, you’re in the right place!

REVOLUTIONIZING WASTE ORGANIC TREATMENT WITH BLACK SOLDIER FLIES/

This webinar explored the pivotal role of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) in managing organic waste in advancing the circular economy by turning organic waste into valuable resources. We discussed its potential for circular, job creation, and resource efficiency, as well as the challenges and opportunities in scaling this innovative solution.

A dynamic and practice-oriented webinar exploring Black Soldier Fly (BSF) production across Africa, hosted by the PREVENT Waste Alliance and the BSF Community of Practice of over 800 members, as part of the BUGS project component funded by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC). This session is not another technical overview — it’s a hands-on exchange between two operational companies on opposite sides of the African continent, sharing insights, challenges, and lessons from the field.

We’ll be joined by:

  •  Living Soils from West Africa
  • Chanzi Group company from East Africa

Together, they’ll discuss:

  •  Core operations – Centralized vs. decentralized production
  •  Scale – How much waste they’re processing and the types of waste used
  •  Technology & methods – From larvae breeding to post-processing innovations
  •  Products & pricing – Fresh vs. dried larvae? Frass? Local market opportunities

Moderated by: Daniela Peguero, Eawag Whether you’re operating a facility, considering a BSF venture, or supporting the sector through policy or finance — this session is for you!

Black Soldier Flies and the Circular Economy

Black Soldier Flies (BSF) are gaining global attention as a powerful solution to food waste, sustainable protein production, and regenerative agriculture. This webinar brings together leading experts and practitioners to share technical insights and real-world applications from across Africa and beyond.

Boosting BSF Impact: How Biochar–Frass Blends Transform Organic Waste

Black Soldier Fly (BSF) bioconversion is quickly becoming one of the most promising solutions for sustainable biowaste treatment in Africa and beyond. What makes this groundbreaking development even more interesting is how BSF systems readily interact with other circular-economy technologies, one of the most promising of which being biochar. More and more practitioners are working with frass-biochar mixes, which provide a “supercharged” soil amendment that enhances nutrient retention, soil structure, and carbon sequestration. Nonetheless, awareness of this technique is fragmented. This webinar will focus on why blending frass and biochar makes agronomic and environmental sense. Discover how this synergy can improve BSF value chains, as well as real case studies from BSF producers that have already implemented the strategy and open questions and research needs for scaling up!

PREVENT WEBINAR: SMALL-SCALE BSF MADE PRACTICAL: SIMPLIFIED APPROACH AND COST INSIGHTS

Join us for an insightful and practice-oriented webinar on how to implement small-scale Black Soldier Fly (BSF) systems.

In this session, Dr. Daniela A. Peguero (Researcher at Eawag) and Dr. Stefan Diener (Co-Director at Eclose) will present a simplified approach to operating BSF facilities, specifically designed for individuals and organisations interested in running BSF systems on a part-time basis.
